The Drum!!!

The Buddhahood is a performance ensemble whose members include music educators, music therapists, composers and world percussion specialists. On stage, they entertain audiences with a world-beat/rock fusion that occupies a genre of its own. The group possesses a unique body of knowledge gained through the incorporation of traditional as well as modern world music elements in their original compositions.

If you would like to have The Buddhahood facilitate a workshop, ceremony, fire circle, indoor drum circle,  or drum and horn march,  contact us – booking@thebuddhahood.com

The Sacred Circle of the Drum can be recognized by 3 pitches – Low is Father, Middle is Mother and High is Child.  The round shape of the drum represents community/family.

Rhythm is the key. Become aware of all rhythms and see how yours fits in.  If it feels right, you become the music and the dance you are dancing becomes a celebration of life.  Let’s celebrate!

…When we gather to play drums
and dance Os around a fire
We talk with our drums and with our
sparkling eyes lit by the firelight

We share our time and space
and air and water
We share the smoke from the fire
and push on through the late hours
hands and feet hurt
but it feels too good to stop

Dancer and drummer
Drummer and dancer
Together we trod to the magic hour
when we realize it won’t be long
and suddenly every second becomes precious
every glance is a universe
every tone, a world
and then just as it all becomes easy

we wake the birds
and then our friends
and we crawl off to our tents
weary and thankful
that a life can be
as beautiful as this…

West African

WEST AFRICAN rhythms come to us through the ages from the Empire of Mali.

Now heard in Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Cote Ivoire and other West African nations, Jembe music is often played in groups of three jembes and three bass drums with bells.

Middle Eastern

These rhythms come to us from the deserts of Arabia and North Africa. The influences of these rhythms and the melodies they accompany can also be heard in Slavic and Mediterranean regions.

These rhythms are often played on doumbeks, frame drums and tamourines, and may or or not accompany melodic instruments. This has become very popular with the rise of belly dancing in the western world.

MUDDY ROOTS

BY SIGHT AND SOUND
THIS ODAL GROUND
BE SAFELY BOUND
AS THOUGHTS DRIFT THROUGH THE LEAVES.

THE GREAT TREE STANDS
ON SACRED LAND
ADJOINED ARE HANDS
AS GUARDIANS SUBMIT TO THE ELEMENTS.

ROOTS EXTEND TO THE COLD POOL BELOW
THROUGH OUR BRANCHES, THE LIFE FORCE FLOWS
AS THE WARMTH OF LIGHT FILLS  HEAD TO TOE
THE MYSTERIES OF EARTH CONVERGE WITH THE HEAVENS.

DRUMS ARE SOON HEARD
LIKE A WOOD PECKING BIRD
AND THE SONG OF SPOKEN WORD
ARE WHISPERS OF OUR CONNECTION.

SO WE SWAY AND WE SING
AND DANCE DEOSIL IN A RING
WHERE EACH END IS THE BEGINNING
WITH OUR ENERGY  EVER-CHANGING AND EVER-FLOWING,

TILL THE MOON STARTS TO STRAY
AS THE SUN PRANCES A NEW DAY.
WE ARE ENLIGHTENED BY HIS RAYS
AND WE PRAISE THE WONDERS OF THE DAWN

FROM THE MUDDY ROOTS OF THE HARD OAK TREE
TO THE TREMBLING LEAF THAT FALLS FREELY
WE OWE OUR LIFE SO BLESSED BE
TO THE LADY AND THE FORESTS
